'Step It Up' on Whidbey this Saturday April 14th

Have you heard about 'Step It Up '07? national day of action on global warming. Communities around the country creating their own action and well hey we on Whidbey can participate
We the people of Whidbey Island
In order to have a more sustainable future
Will from this day, April 14, 2007, forward Reduce our Carbon Footprint by using these tips

1) flip the switch!
Now that you’ve changed all your light bulbs to CFLs or LEDs don’t forget to turn them off every time you leave the room. Unplug those ‘vampires’ – the electronics and appliances, like cell phone chargers, hair dryers and TV that are turned ‘off’ but are still sucking energy. Solution – plug multiples into a power strip, then you just have to
‘flip the switch’.

2) go organic
This island has an abundance of organics from food to fertilizers available. Let’s keep the oil-based chemicals out of our gardens, water and mouths - protecting our bees, birds and butterflies as well as us.

3) Buy locally
Support local farmers, businesses etc., reducing transportation, CO2 and keeping tax dollars on the island as well as strengthening the resilience of our island community.

4) UNPlasticize WATeR
$100 billion was spent in one year purchasing bottled water while only $11.3 billion is needed to give everyone in the world access to drinkable water. Bottle your own water.

5) remember the 5 Rs
respect, rethink, Reduce, reuse, recycle
“When you throw something away - where is away”

6) BUILD GREEN
The bigger the house the bigger the carbon footprint. Use local resources, creators and craftsman. Use recycled, non- toxic and sustainably produced materials.

7) Beauty
Treasuring the qualities and beauty of this island is what will help motivate us to act and carry us through this challenge we are all faced with now.

8) Carpool
Casual car pooling - “capooling” could be a new norm on Whidbey Island. Fewer cars going to events or shops, means a lower island carbon footprint. How cool… or capool.
